Mesa Harmony Garden is a project of Empowerment WORKS, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, and is governed by an Advisory Board which meets at least four times annually.

Hugh Kelly, Chair, joined the board in August 2011, becoming Chair in February 2014. He joined the first volunteer day at the garden in October 2010 and has been the volunteer coordinator for most of the intervening period. He wrote the garden's monthly column in the Mesa Newspaper from October 2011 until the paper’s final edition in June 2023. A certified Permaculture Designer, and a Master Gardener with the UCANR Cooperative Extension Service, Hugh served on the organizing committee for the Santa Barbara Food Alliance, and founded the Farmers Alliance for Restoration (FAR), a nonprofit program empowering farmers in East Africa to develop sustainable farms and livelihoods.

Russ Baldocchi, Vice-Chair, joined the Board in July 2021. He is a graduate of UC Berkeley (BS '84, PhD '92), and recently completed an AS (‘25) in Environmental Horticulture at SBCC and has joined the local Master Gardener Program (‘23). He has volunteered at Mesa Harmony Garden since 2020, and teaches several of the monthly workshops jointly with the Santa Barbara Master Gardeners. Russ is married and has an 18-yr old son. He worked for 22 yrs in the biotechnology/health field, most recently 11 yrs developing cancer diagnostics at Agilent Technologies in Carpinteria. When not volunteering in the garden at MHG, he can be found working locally as either a handyman or a landscape consultant. At home, Russ now has dozens of fruit trees - most multiply-grafted - supporting over 70 varieties.

Pamela Lombardo , Treasurer, joined the Board in October 2022. She is a graduate of UCLA (BA-Psychology) and Loyola Marymount (MBA). She retired from UCSB after 20 years where she held several leadership positions including Associate Vice Chancellor of Administration. She is a graduate and member of UC’s Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners Program (class of 2019). She is married and has a beautiful dog named Gina. When she is not in the garden, she enjoys reading, running, swimming, and walking Gina!

Janet Rogers, Secretary, is a retired educator and longtime home gardener. She has chickens, a vegetable garden, several compost piles, and many fruit trees. She joined the Master Gardener Program in 2018 and has enjoyed being involved with gardening in the community, including weekly at Mesa Harmony Garden. Janet joined the Mesa Harmony Garden board in 2019 and serves on the Finance Committee as a backup for the role of Treasurer.

Josh Kane was the inaugural President of the board, subsequently serving as Vice President from February 2014 to July 2017. He is a resident of the Mesa, where he also works as a Financial Adviser with Edward Jones. He is Vice-President of the Mesa Business Association and a board member of the Kiwanis Club of Santa Barbara, all of which he fits in around his role as the father of two young daughters and husband to his high school sweetheart. |

Carol Shaw has been volunteering in the garden since March 2020, and joined the Board in April 2025. She has a BA in Political Science and Russian from Barnard College and a JD from Hastings College of the Law. She specialized in music copyright litigation.
Now retired and humbled by gardening in California (why is my soil like concrete and there is no season when the bugs die!???) she took SBCC’s Advanced Green Gardener certification classes. Since 2019, she has volunteered at Lotusland, in the insectary, as a docent and currently in the Japanese Garden. She enjoys ocean swimming and learning to play violin. |

Larry Saltzman was the garden's Permaculture Designer, and was a member of the Board between 2011 and 2019. He specializes in Mediterranean Food Forests, and he and his wife Linda have a 30+ year old Food Forest in Santa Barbara. Larry has spoken and written extensively on Food Forests, and lead many workshops at Mesa Harmony Garden. He was President of the Channel Islands chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers, co-founded the Santa Barbara Organic Garden Club, is past President of the Permaculture Guild of Santa Barbara, and was named a local hero by the SB Independent in 2008.
