Preparation for the Mesa Harmony Garden Scion Exchange
February 1, 2025, 8:30 am - 10 am
A scion exchange can be a great experience for those interested in collecting new cultivars of interesting fruits to grow at home. Here’s a link to familiarize you with your first Scion Exchange experience….
People who contribute well-labeled, healthy scions to the exchange will get early access to make their selections for what to take home. Then we'll open it up for everyone else to browse and choose scion material. Schedule
8:30 am: Donors arrive and help arrange scions into groups of similar fruit trees. 9:00 am: Donors get early access to scion exchange. 9:30 am: Scion exchange opens to non-donors. 10:00 am - 12 noon: Separate Event, same location: The Master Gardener Program of Santa Barbara County is sponsoring a Fruit Tree Grafting Workshop. You need to register in advance for this workshop; click here to register: ucanr.edu/sbmg |
Scion Exchange Rules
No registration required for the Scion Exchange session from 8:30am - 10:00am.
Donors will be given a wristband upon donating at 8:30 am.
Wristband enables early access at 9 am.
Bring pens, labels (masking tape works well), and plastic bags to hold your selections.
Bring only healthy, carefully prepared scions (see link below). These should be recently collected and/stored for up to 1-2 months.
Please do not bring Citrus or Fig (Ficus) scions, as these often have pests that are not easily managed at this time and will not be allowed into the exchange area.
Patented varieties: While almost all fruit tree varieties are off patent, some are still ON patent. Patented varieties are not allowed at the exchange, so please check here before donating.
